A Lincoln City-area man died Friday morning in a single vehicle crash on Highway 229 south of Lincoln City.
On December 15, 2006 at approximately 9:04 a.m., a 2000 Oldsmobile van driven by WALTER DAVID KNOTTNERUS, age 75, from Lincoln City, was southbound on Highway 229 near milepost 2. According to witness information, the van moved to the right shoulder to allow a following vehicle to pass. As the van moved to the right and was slowing down, it continued down an approximate 10 foot embankment where it struck a tree head-on. The van rolled onto its passenger side where it came to rest.
KNOTTNERUS was not using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased after being removed by North Lincoln Fire & Rescue personnel.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Newport Area Command office are completing the investigation. Failure to use safety restraints may have been a contriburing factor in his death.
