12/03/2006
Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
Office: (503) 731-3020 ext. 247

The search for the JAMES KIM family reportedly missing since November 25, 2006 is continuing.

Personnel and resources from Oregon State Police, Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Jackson County Sheriff's Office, and Douglas County Sheriff's Office, including search & rescue resources, are still working as of Sunday afternoon from the ground and air checking secondary rural routes in southwest Oregon. Helicopter support will be discontinued at darkness, but ground search crews are prepared to continue searching into the evening. Private resources secured by family members, including helicopters, have been assisting.

Approximately 40 personnel from the respective agencies are reported to be out checking known possible routes on remote area roads. Some of the roads are described as narrow and curvy with steep bordering embankments. Some roads are near 4,000 feet in elevation and some sections have about 6 inches of frozen snow making travel difficult. Sno-Cats are assisting with the search in those areas.

The Josephine County Sheriff's Office reports that these are prime Christmas tree cutting areas. Anyone traveling in these areas are asked to report any information that may help searchers.

The latest confirmed information placed the KIM family in Roseburg at a local restaurant on Saturday evening, November 25th. They were enroute to Gold Beach area to stay at Tu Tu Tun Lodge. The family never arrived and has failed to return home in San Francisco.

Family members JAMES KIM, age 35, KATI KIM, age 30, and daughters, PENELOPE, age 4, and SABINE, age 7 months, were known to be traveling in a silver 2005 Saab 92X station wagon displaying personalized California license plates "DOESF". New information provided by family members indicates the car may have visible recent damage extending forward from the driver's door along the left quarter panel and wheel area. This damage was the result of a previous traffic-related incident in which the driver's door was reportedly repaired but the other noted damage may still be visible.

A toll-free number in Oregon is available for tips into the Oregon State Police Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888. Over 100 tips have been received for follow-up.
