Fatal Vehicle / Bicycle Crash - Highway 131 west of Tillamook

A Tillamook-area man died Friday afternoon when he was struck by a van while riding a bicycle on Highway 131 (Netarts Highway) about a mile west of Tillamook.
 
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Andrew Merila, on November 14, 2008 at approximately 2:15 p.m. JUAN VARGAS-TORRES, age 46, from Tillamook, was riding a bicycle westbound on Highway 131 near milepost 1 approaching the Trask River Bridge when he was struck from behind by a westbound 1993 GMC Safari van.
 
VARGAS-TORRES was not using a protective helmet and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
 
The van's driver, STEVEN R. HUNTINGTON, age 54, from Tillamook, was not injured. He was using safety restraints.
 
OSP troopers from the Tillamook, Astoria and McMinnville offices are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist. The point of impact is to be determined.
 
Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, Tillamook Police Department, Tillamook Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene. A detour was established and the highway was closed about four hours.
