Forensic Lab Director - Pendleton
The Oregon State Police (OSP) has an opportunity and is looking for a strong leader to serve as the Forensic Lab Director in Pendleton, Oregon.   This is a management service position and not represented by a union.  
 
This position is accountable for overall forensic operations within the Pendleton Forensic Laboratory.  Duties include assigning and reviewing work performed by employees; coordinating the activities of all functions and personnel assigned to the laboratory; and assisting the Division Director in implementing and carrying out the Department’s and Division’s Strategic Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years of management experience in a public or private organization which included responsibility for: a) development of program rules and policies, b) long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation; OR
     
  • Three years of professional experience as a program/project leader, assigning and reviewing work of professional staff (e.g., engineers, etc.) including project responsibility or developing goals and objectives, project evaluation, and monitoring and controlling or preparing a budget.
     
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES 
The ideal candidate would possess the following desired attributes:   
  • Four years experience with various forensic disciplines (e.g., chemistry, crime scene, trace evidence, etc) 
  • Currently qualified as an examiner within a laboratory
  • Experience with project management as a supervisor or has held leadership positions in forensics
  • Professional interactions with law enforcement and legislative representatives

Forensic Scientist 2
There is currently an open recruitment for Forensic Scientist 2. 
 
This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified individuals and may be used to fill Forensic Scientist 2 vacancies as they occur.  Qualified applicants will be notified on a quarterly basis or sooner depending on the needs of the Division.  Deadlines for application reviews are March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31.
 
This Forensic Scientist 2 is a journeyman level for this classification series and requires at least
  • A Doctorate degree in a natural science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, forensic science, pharmacology, bacteriology or a closely related field AND five years experience as a Forensic Scientist.  OR
  • A Master’s degree in a natural science; AND seven years experience as a Forensic Scientist. OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in a natural science; AND nine years experience as a Forensic Scientist.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following credentials:
  • A Master’s degree in a biology, chemistry or forensic science related area.  AND
  • Successfully completed a minimum of 12 semester or equivalent credit hours from a combination of  undergraduate and graduate course work covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology),  statistics or population genetics, or other subjects which provide a basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis.  AND
  • At least three years of human DNA experience as an analyst on forensic samples at time of hire.

Forensic Scientist Entry
There is currently an open recruitment for Forensic Scientist Entry.  The Forensic Scientist Entry is a trainee/apprentice position.

Forensic Scientist 1
There is currently an open recruitment for Forensic Scientist 1. 
 
This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified individuals and may be used to fill Forensic Scientist 1 vacancies as they occur. Qualified applicants will be notified on a quarterly basis or sooner depending on the needs of the Division.  Deadlines for application reviews are March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31.
 
The Forensic Scientist 1 is a journeyman level for this classification series and requires five years work experience in a nationally accredited forensic laboratory.  If you are unsure if you qualify for the Forensic Scientist 1 position, submit an application fulfilling all requirements of the Forensic Scientist Entry position (See announcement number LESP0701) and you will be considered for both.
